In March 2013 Renfrewshire Council adopted the Early Years Strategy- Families First initiative - to provide additional support for families in target areas to address the issues that impact on children’s development. The Families First initiative was developed in three distinct strands, with one of the strands aiming to ensure a family centred ‘core team’ approach in the identified areas of Linwood and Ferguslie Park. Through the establishment of teams of core workers in the identified neighbourhoods the teams direct their efforts on the identification and development of relationships with vulnerable and disadvantaged families, provide support in parenting, homemaking and health and well-being advice and support and help families to access services. The Service currently provides local families with co-ordinated, flexible support that is sustainable and complements the work of the Families First Core Teams within the specified localities. The Families First core team model in each locality consists of: - locality manager - coordinator - key workers - well-being worker - Income advisor - energy advice workers The core team model in Linwood and Ferguslie was enhanced through working in partnership. Renfrewshire Council has allocated monies from the Tackling Poverty fund to extend the successful and innovative Families First Core Team approach within Linwood and Ferguslie for a period of 1 year with the option to extend for a further one year period. The Council intends to create a contract with providers from the Independent sector to work in partnership with the Families First Core teams to provide support to children and families.
