Bord Na Mona operates more than 180 locomotives on over 700 km of 3- foot gauge industrial railway network across its operations located in the Irish midlands. Eighty of these locomotives are engaged in heavy-duty peat haulage. Of these fifty locomotives are scheduled to be refurbished with new engines, electrical control and telemetry systems over the next two years. The first of these upgraded locomotives will enter operational testing in May 2016. To increase the versatility and cost effectiveness of the refurbished locomotive fleet, Bord Na Mona now seeks proposals for linked multipleworking of trains. Each train comprises one locomotive coupled to 12 to 20 wagons. The rail transport system works on permanent and temporary track, interfacing with public roads via level crossings and is utilised to haul in excess of three million tonnes of peat per year for power generation, domestic heating and horticultural products. A linked multiple train will comprise two (or more) trains coupled together and working under the control of one of the constituent locomotives.

Swords Road, County Dublin. The site comprises three main buildings, various car parks access road and footpaths. The purpose of the project is to bring the existing services, external roads, footpaths and drainage services to a standard sufficient for “Taking in Charge” purposes. The works included the excavation by milling of significant areas of the existing paving and replacing with sub base, binder, base course and wearing course. The replacement of surface wearing course includes the raising and renewal of a number of utility covers and replacement of road markings. The existing foul and surface water networks have had extensive investigation carried out which have highlighted a number of internal issues which are being address through a combination of internal pipework repairs, excavation and replacement of existing lines and replace these with new. The works include the removal and replacement of all existing footpaths to the west of the site, various signs and public lighting columns. The full scope of the Works and the obligations of the Contractor are to be ascertained by reference to the Contract Documents and Drawings as a whole.

The WISER (Working with Industrial Spaces to Exemplify Reuse) project brings together a broad spectrum of interrelated operations and expertise to champion the development of resource efficiency. The aim is to produce a centre to demonstrate excellence in reuse practice including the construction process. The Project seeks to lead change from waste to resource through reuse, redesign, research and education and as such it is desired that tendering contractors should illustrate experience in the following: 1. Systems: Projects incorporating special elements of sustainable design such as grey water reuse, rainwater harvesting, composting toilets, reed beds, urine treatment dilution, green wall, PV panels, Solar panels, CHP and heat pumps. 2. Reuse Material: Refurbishment projects incorporating reused materials. Refurbishment projects incorporating recycled materials. 3. Natural Materials: Projects incorporating ecological design aspects with special materials that seek to exclude petrochemical based products. 4. Non-standard Construction Materials: Projects incorporating elements of non-standard construction such as hempcrete walling. 5.Innovation Projects that seek to demonstrate innovative and sustainable technologies. The project is the refurbishment of the boiler house building. It is a steel framed structure with external walls and roof consisting of single skin metal cladding with glazed panels at high level. There is a two storey section of the building at the northern end which is clad externally with brick. The refurbished boilerhouse building will accommodate a café, café kitchen, education and training room, fashion workshop, furniture workshop, cycling workshop, paint workshop, toilets, plant areas, Eco store, exhibition space and staff accommodation.
