The objective of this ONR-supported project is to investigate the acoustic propagation characteristics of rivers and estuaries at low-to-mid-frequencies. The temperature/depth/pH instrument is necessary to monitor the environment during the transmission of acoustic signals in the river/estuarine field experiment. Data collected by this instrument will be analyzed and used to characterize the dynamic estuarine environment and used in acoustic propagation modeling in an effort to decipher the contribution of pH to acoustic propagation characteristics. The ultimate goal is to apply this new knowledge to new capabilities in rapid environmental assessment, persistent, autonomous monitoring in denied environments, and inform new sensor designs for future operational capabilities.

SI3400 Fundamentals of Engineering Project Management (one DL section) This course examines modern techniques of engineering project management from a systems perspective, including project planning, organization, and control. Specific topics include discussion of the systems engineering management process, risk management, scheduling methodologies, the DoD acquisition environment, management of design activities, PERT, CPM, and project control mechanisms. Case studies are used to examine application of principles. Large-scale system management, mitigation of technical risk, integrated product and process development, quality management, contracting, and the international environment are discussed. Large scale systems management problems are examined using commercial software suites. Covers application of fundamental systems project management processes and methods to an integrative system project. Development of communication skills is accomplished through oral presentations and written reports. 1.0 Background/Introduction: The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Center for Autonomous Vehicle Research (CAVR) has a distinguished history of robotic technology development, including Unmanned Aerial (UAVs), Surface (USVs), and Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), which include Autonomous Underwater (AUV) and Remotely Operated (ROV) vehicles. For this project, CAVR is collaborating with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center (JSC) to quantify the benefits of autonomy in robotic assistive systems on mission effectiveness, efficiency, and safety for joint robot-human operations. The project outcome is of interest to NPS sponsors, as well as, NASA. CAVR will participate in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) event, which will take place during the period of 07/01/2016 - 08/31/2016 at the Florida International University (FIU) Aquarius underwater habitat in Key Largo, FL. During this event, Aquanauts stay in the Aquarius habitat for the duration of the mission and perform daily tasks, including joint human-robot tasks. 2.0 Scope: FIU will provide access to the Aquarius underwater habitat and associated surface support to the NPS CAVR team, NASA JSC team, and NASA Aquanauts as negotiated by NASA JSC for the NEEMO 21 event. The Aquarius habitat is the only pressurized aquatic facility in the world that allows long-term saturation dive operations. This facility allows persistent NASA Aquanaut operations, analogous to Extravehicular Activities (aka Spacewalks). These analogous operations allow for joint robot-human operations, providing CAVR an opportunity to introduce and evaluate robotic technologies for joint robot-human tasks. NPS CAVR requires support for seven days of operations during the period of 07/01/2016 08/31/2016

Healthcare Modeling and Simulation Certificate Program: This Healthcare Certificate Program is a collaborative effort between the NPS Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulation (MOVES) Institute and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). The certificate program consists of four courses offered sequentially on a one course per quarter basis. The Healthcare Certificate courses explore the theoretical foundations of learning and training, research methods for healthcare training, simulation technologies for healthcare training, and management of simulation training centers. The instruction of the four-course asynchronous program begins in October of each year and ends in September. The certificate program is aimed at physicians, nurses, and simulation center managers who want to accelerate improvements in simulation technology for healthcare training. Scope Contractor support of the Healthcare Certificate Courses is needed for the healthcare subject matter expertise element of the entire educational content. Each of the four courses has one or more instructors from NPS or USUHS. The contactor shall contribute to the program with healthcare subject matter expertise to be delivered in an instructional manner that promotes each student’s deep understanding of the topics and how to apply them within the students’ careers.
