Environmental and social review and advisory services in developing countries and emerging markets.
DEG is one of the leading European development finance institutions which finances projects in manufacturing, agriculture and infrastructure in developing countries and emerging markets. A number of these projects are of medium-high and high environmental as well as social relevance. They range over developing countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe / former Soviet Union / Central Asia.
These projects need to be reviewed during due diligence and on a regular basis regarding their impact on environmental as well as social matters in the respective region. Applicable standards include IFC performance standards, good international practice and the relevant environmental and social laws.
Review procedures in general entail site visits including meetings with the responsible management, site tour, focus group meetings with workers, visit to adjacent communities, meeting with key community stakeholders and interviews with community members. In addition, occasional short-term measures such as one day workshops with the local company on site may be commissioned. The findings plus recommendations will be summarized in a standardized report according to the contracting authority's internal environmental and social review summary format. Furthermore, the operator will develop an environmental and social action plan. The contract is a framework agreement.
