Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering (ELEC) is relocating to new premises which necessitates a purchase of a new microwave anechoic chamber for far-field antenna measurements and 5G wireless systems development. The new anechoic chamber (chamber) will replace the existing facilities of the Department of Radio Science and Engineering (RAD) and the Department of Communications and Networking (COMNET).

Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering (ELEC) is relocating to new premises which necessitates a purchase of a new microwave anechoic chamber for far-field antenna measurements and 5G wireless systems development. The new anechoic chamber (chamber) will replace the existing facilities of the Department of Radio Science and Engineering (RAD) and the Department of Communications and Networking (COMNET).

The chamber shall be of self-standing rectangular type and EM-shielded. The construction method for the chamber metal EM-shielding shall be of modular type, not welded. Desired shielding attenuation is 100 dB or better up to 18 GHz. The chamber will have at least one door, feedthroughs for cabling and a provision for ventilating modest heat loads.

The distance between the transmitting and receiving antennas in a far-field measurement should be 5.5 m at minimum and the free space between the sidewall absorber tips at least 4.0 m. The chamber shall be lined with microwave absorbing material resulting in a quiet-zone reflectivity level of -50 dB or better from 10 GHz to 60 GHz. The lowest chamber operating frequency is 2 GHz. The chamber shall include an antenna positioning and instrumentation system that enables far-field measurements of the full spherical antenna pattern to be made in the frequency range from 2 GHz to 60 GHz. The load capacity of the antenna positioner should allow an antenna under test to be measured, e.g., when attached to a head phantom, with a total weight up to 10 kg.
