S3 (Super Separator Spectrometer) is an innovative spectrometer specifically designed for fundamental physics experiments using stable beams of very high intensity of the superconducting linear accelerator GANIL, in the Spiral2 project.
The CEA is responsible for providing technical Lot "beam dump" S3 spectrometer. It must allow to stop 99.9% of the power of the beam from the accelerator, the latter up to a value of 5 to 15 kW in most cases. The interaction of the beam with the material results in the creation of many radioactive ions and neutrons. Thus, the "beam dump" is intrinsically linked to issues of nuclear safety and radiation protection. Although these be adequately handled by the sails of the room, it should be noted that the waiting time to access the facilities of the "beam dump" can be reduced by adding additional protections.
It is in this sense that the CEA wants to use a radiological shielding enclosure not participating in safety, but to optimize the availability of the accelerator at GANIL.
It is stated that this radiation protective enclosure itself is installed in a vacuum chamber at a pressure of 10 exp (-8) mbar.
This chamber consists of several compartments containing lead (having a thickness of the order of 10 cm by 4 π steradians) sealed on the outside by a stainless steel skin. It consists of several parts, namely a tank, also called a guillotine base and a lid.
