Currently, VTT operates a stationary test facility for vehicle exhaust emissions, consisting of a CVS systems and gas analyzers as well as chassis dynamometers for both light duty and heavy duty vehicles. The PEMS acquisition now under consideration is to enhance our research portfolio and also to enable portable exhaust emission measurements of such vehicles to meet EU Real Driving Emissions (RDE) legislation.

The system must meet all the appropriate conditions and requirements stated in European EU 6d No. 692/2008 Annex 1 regulation and European Euro IV In-Service Conformity rules (EU No. 582/2011).

The PEMS system architecture shall be modular and consist of the following measurement modules:

— System control module (integration of devices and sensors, data logging, calibration, external inputs such as GPS, OBD2, J1939 etc.),

— Module for measuring real time NO/NO2 concentrations of the exhaust gas (CLD),

— Module for measuring real time CO/CO2 concentrations of the exhaust gas (NDIR),

— Module for measuring real time total hydrocarbons THC and the methane CH4 concentrations of the exhaust gas (FID), a heated sample line must be included,

— Module for measuring the real time particle number concentration (PN) of the exhaust gas,

— Modules for measuring the particle mass with gravimetric filter sampling and micro soot sensor (GFM and MSS),

— Real time exhaust flow meter (EFM) with separate measuring tubes for low and high flow,

— Calibration module,

— Power supply module with batteries and a charger (230V).
