Vessels must be certified by Transport Canada to conduct research work. The objective of the project is to study the biological effects of operational discharges from Grand Banks oil production platforms (Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose) on the early life stages of fish by measuring hydrocarbons and associated indicators of exposure e.g. mixed function oxygenase (MFO induction). The juvenile fish sampling is planned to occur in May, June and July 2015, with option years proposed for 2016 and 2017, to collect and store juvenile fish (3-9 centimeters in length) at different sampling stations around the development offshore platforms and a control site north of the development areas for measurements of effects from the operation discharges. The contractor will provide a biologist and technicians trained by DFO personnel, and who have data collection experience, to assist in training participants, collecting data and monitoring at-sea scientific activity. Participants in the cod sntinel program will collect biological data for age-determination and will also record the presence of by-catch. The participants must supply all fixed fishing gear including boats and crew. Mobile gear will be supplied by the contractor.
